After the appearance in the late 1880s and early 1890s of Arthur Conan Doyle's works about the famous private detective Sherlock Holmes (the stories "Study in Crimson Tones", "The Sign of Four" and the cycle of stories "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes"), the name of their author gained world fame. Readers in many countries eagerly awaited new stories and novels from him, on the pages of which this "recluse from Baker Street" would act. The secret of such success lies not only in the remarkable ingenuity and observation characteristic of Doyle's hero, but above all in the vitality and truthfulness of this image. "The hero of Conan Doyle is the only literary character since the time of Dickens, who has firmly entered the life and language of the people," emphasized the author's contemporary, the famous master of words Gilbert Keith Chesterton.
This volume is the second of the four-volume edition, which includes all the works of the English classic about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes in Ukrainian translation.
